Why The Oscars Confused Me
Ah, The Academy Awards. A place to showcase true artistry. To elevate and raise up the creative minds of our generation. To honor the film geniuses as we all “dream in gold”. I must say, this year I was quite pleased with everyone who won. I can’t honestly say I was thrilled with every nomination. I though Michael B. Jordan was a shoo-in for something! But I guess he has to earn his stripes with the Academy.
Chris Rock however, did me some disappointing as he tried to “save the world” from the white Oscars. His over the top stereotype driven comedy seems to have gone out the window as he bowed down to the PC police and forced a room full of white actors to squirm and feel ashamed of their success in the industry. I suppose if we look at it from an awkward barometer it’s pretty hilarious, but it was white privilege police to the rescue as Rock spouted off racial remarks like “Hollywood is sorority racist.” and “if they nominated the hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job! You’d be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now!”
This is vaguely humorous but is more of a “funny cuz it’s not true” kinda moment since the Academy gets to pick the hosts anyway. This all begs my first question…
Is Hollywood Actually Racist?
In my opinion, it’s not so much racist as it is elitist. Although Hollywood may have a tendency to exclude black people at the lower echelons of the film industry, the fact of the matter is that black people in film aren’t actually that under-represented. Black people are 12.3% of the U.S population and they make up about that same percentage of the film industry. Latinos however which make up 17% make up less than 5% of Hollywood and Asians are almost non existent.
What I mean by elitist is that Hollywood doesn’t care what color your skin is, they care about whether or not you agree with them! An overwhelming majority of Hollywood films are catered to a liberal or less family friendly audience yet there is a 33% of Americans who are conservatives and 38% who consider themselves unknown or moderates according to the wall st. journal.
So Hollywood isn’t necessarily attacking anyones race, Jamie Fox, Will Smith, and many others would have a rough time if they were, they are attacking our ideologies. Our cultural outlook.
Wrong way to celebrate diversity.
Right to celebrate diversity.
“So what a great opportunity to our generation to really liberate ourselves from all prejudice and, you know, this tribal thinking, and make sure for once and forever that the color of the skin become as irrelevant as the length of our hair.” -Alejandro Gonzalez Iñàrritu
Speaking of The Revenant. Young Leo broke the internet and deservedly so. His skills as an actor long surpass his knowledge of Climate Change (see what I did there). But on a serious note, aside from how giddy I was to finally see Leo win, even though I though he should have won for Wolf of Wall St., I was slightly put off by his need to use his speech to push the Holly-Bama Agenda of Climate Change. Leaving aside the obvious genius of Leo as a prodigy of the screen I’d like to adress his speech.
We will start with “…Climate Change is real. It is happening right now.”
What was known in the 70s as “global cooling” and then became “global warming” is now called “climate change”. It is the perfect political agenda, which can never be disproven scientifically, since “change” can mean anything. It’s perpetual. It’s flexible. NASA has become a politicized department under the Obama administration and has been using “Climate Change” as a question to one simple solution…MORE GOVERNMENT. You feel the bern yet? Am I saying humans aren’t hurting the earth at all and we do nothing wrong? Absolutely not!
What I am saying, is that we’ve been dealt an ideology gift wrapped with good intentions. Climate Change awareness and activism is nothing but self gratifying…more on that later.
It’s happening right now…
Well actually it’s not. The satellites located outside of planet earth have barely changed in temperature in 17 years. Look it up. 0.7 degrees warming since 1979.
It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species…
as Leo said those words ISIS was killing 83 people. Literally. At the same time. C’mon.
Support leaders who do not speak for the big polluters or big corporations…
Ok this is two fold. This is his endorsement of Bernie Sanders only he is way too classy to come right out and tell people who to vote for. Also, he is under some impression that reusable energy will benefit the entire world.
Remember the self gratification stuff I told you I’d bring up later? Here it is. Activism and “Green” energy will only help the 1st world, it will KILL the 3rd world countries, it’s the whole reason we haven’t turned the whole world green already. It’s a sad truth, and as much as I’d love to call the oil companies evil, there’s a reason big oil is as big as it is….it’s because we NEED them. 3rd world countries need them.
Leo however, doesn’t need them, yet he uses up tons of oil 😉
All in all, the Oscars were fairly delivered. Mad Max was an excellent film and well deserving of all those awards. I’ll complain one more time about Michael B. Jordan just because he had such an incredible role and I didn’t think Tom Hanks needed another movie under his belt. But this wasn’t a hit piece, this was a different way of looking at things, I hope you can embrace my opinion. What did you think about the Oscars?
