Why Should Christians Stay Healthy?
God loves us and made each of us in His image. It is stated over and over in the Bible that we were created in His image and that we are His temple. Our selves and bodies reflect our Father and Creator. This makes staying healthy, a vital part of our spiritual walks.
Our Body Is A Temple With A Table
In Matthew 21:12 Jesus drives out those in the temple who were buying and selling goods, defaming the place of God. When we don’t take care of ourselves, whether it’s by lack of nutrition or exercise, we are neglecting the house of God. When we ask God into our lives, we welcome Him to dwell inside of us, and we must keep the place of God sacred. 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” In the time of the apostles, people were constantly getting exercise.
Food Has Become A Luxury
Oftentimes work was hard labor, and walking was a usual way to get around. The amount of food we eat today would be considered luxurious. As time has gone on, our portions have continued to grow, along with our bodies. Processed foods have become a normal meal, and fast food or dessert can be found at every corner. Sugar, salt, and fat cravings have evolutionary backgrounds. Fat especially, was important to us as humans back when we needed the long term energy from not knowing when we would eat again. Companies now have begun taking advantage of these natural cravings by amping up the amount of sugar and salt in foods, and leaving out other nutritional value and making them anything but healthy. Therefore we end up having to eat large amounts of these foods to make up for the lack of other nutrition.
There’s Always Grace, But That’s Not A License To Sin
There is nothing wrong with indulging every now and then. Taking a rest day and having cake won’t kill you, so long as it’s done in moderation. However, exercising and eating right will leave your body healthier and happier. The same respectful way you treat a church is the way you should treat your body. The church, without people, is a building, but God has chosen us to forever be His house.
