Why is God Talking to Russell About Ciara?
In the words of the Brooklyn based rapper If you don’t know, Now you know! Super Bowl winning QB Russell Wilson took to a church to express his beliefs on many things and life lessons, but of course…we had to get the dirt. Russell talked briefly (no longer than 3 minutes) about his relationship, and said “God told me to lead her.”
As the sensationalist mayday that is Rolling Stone magazine compiled a list of tweets about people who think that celibacy is just absurd nowadays, allow me to express what Russell may have meant when he said he would “lead Ciara”.
After hearing the my main man Russell Wilson talk about his past and how he became the man we see in front of us today, I became aware of a couple of things. Although I don’t know what may have gone into Wilson’s appearance at Rock Church, I can assure you this looked more like a media interview than a church sermon or time of edification. Miles McPherson, Pastor at Rock Church steered him through navigated questions as if he had a public image to uphold and a PR person stage right ready to pounce. McPherson even jumps from one topic childishly squealing/singing “Russell’s got a girlfriend! Russell’s got a girlfriend!”. Russell was clearly uncomfortable the entire time as he squirmed in his chair trying to play to McPhersons crude humor.
For all who are reading this and really wondering why Russell may feel like he needs to ‘take it upon himself’ and lead Ciara it is simple. He understands his responsibility as a Christian. I can’t talk for Wilson, but I can say that when someone hears from God/or says they hear from God, they are aligning themselves with the characteristics of the God of scripture.
The analogy which believers use to describe the leading of men in relationships is this:
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word…” Ephesians 5:25
Now I get that they aren’t married yet, but why date without a roadmap. Jeff Bethke has a great quote that says:
“Dating without the aim of marriage is like going to the grocery store without money. Either you leave disappointed or you take something that isn’t yours.”
It seems like Russ & Ciara are setting themselves up for success. Why complicate things? They both have high profile lives and if things don’t work out at least no one got too hurt. We can judge him all we want for not pouncing on Ciara right away but when you’re in a position like that, would you really want to give up the purity you have earned?
Rumor has it Russell’s ex wife cheated on him, which makes this whole purity thing even more of a necessity for him. Why put himself through more hurt? Once again, he is leading the interaction by deciding what will be best for the long term of their relationship.
Russell is hoping to learn to love like Jesus loves the Church. To lead her like Jesus lead his disciples, teaching them and showing them truth. This seems like a lot for just one statement, I know. But you heard from Russell himself, he is not new in his faith, He has been a believer since high school, and sexual temptation is important for him.
It is now Russell’s job to follow through since all this went public, and it is the church’s job to pray, not slander and point fingers at a man who is living his life under huge scrutiny and judgement. Remember what Billy Graham said:
“It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge and my job to love.”
Imagine if you had a magnifying lens on every bit of your life? Would every corner be spotless? That’s why Gods grace is sufficient.
