The Doctrine of Deadpool
I have been holding my breath waiting to see Deadpool in all of it’s gory glory. And despite Christian deliberation about whether or not a Man of Faith should even partake in such an act, I went anyway. I know, such a Deadpool thing to do. What I didn’t expect is two hours of morally ambiguous revenge. NO SPOILERS don’t worry.
If you know about Deadpool as a Marvel character, you know he’s a savage, whitty, suto-charming character who’s destructive past leaves him with a need for retaliation and decayed morals. Because of this the premise of the movie is the anti-hero. The guy who doesn’t give a flip about justice, yet seeks out his personal vengeance. For some, this seems like a realistic play on an old super-hero tradition. But lately in Hollywood we’ve seen the decline of many genres. To let go of the SUPER in Super-hero is not something I’m willing to do.
Mr.Pool is unlike any other mutated Marvel character in that he willfully choses his murderous lifestyle, and talks about it openly…with you…the audience. I love the fourth wall break! One of the best things from the comic to keep. Deadpool’s self awareness is what shocks me. Where a character like Wolverine seems to have an internal struggle, Deadpool lays it all out for us to know and he shows us his thought process. It’s not a pretty one.
The more I watched, the less I thought it was a good idea for me to be there. Not because of violence or sex scenes, but because of the moral implications that a hero no longer has to do what is right to be seen as a hero. This was the focus of the movie. Follow your gut, kill the bad guy, kill everyone that gets in your way, make wise cracks about it and you’ll be a hero…inevitably.
The worst part about all of this is that I’m not saying it was a bad movie. I loved this movie! Therein lies the problem. I read an article on Relevant which addressed something similar, which speaks on how Hollywood will take this and run. Every hero from here on out will become raunchy and wise cracking.
I’m sorry, I don’t wanna see Batman blowing peoples brains out and cursing every other word.
What did you think of Deadpool? Do you think Hollywood will use this as a new setup for Hero movies?
