Pop Cultures Most Influential Christians Right Now
As believers its nessesary to recognize the difference between our morals/values and our purpose. Our purpose is what we should be doing for God and how we should do it while our values are the ongoing love and relationship we have with God. Both are crutial and the people below got this right. Here are todays most influential Christians.
The only thing that makes Curry better than his sensational and legendary basketball skills are his family values and love for God. His signature point is only overshadowed by his signature accompaniment of his family to every event. Curry is a loving father and true to his convictions. His MVP speech testified to the importance of his faith and growing up with parents who taught him the truth of the gospel, hard work and determination. Watch it here.
Dr. Ben Carson
Dr. Carson is a current candidate for the presidency. He is a retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon who grew up in a low income home to a single mother. Being raised with a mother who could not even read, she saw the importance in education and developed in him early a love for the Lord, and books. Dr. Carson has since been the first to separate conjoined siamese twins at the head and has had a feature film made about his life played by actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Watch Dr. Carson give an excellent speech about education here.
A father of the Christian Hip Hop movement, Lecrae is the first to blur the line between secular and mainstream success. His album Anomaly won Top Christian Music Album for Billboard, which was the first time a Rapper was ever to do that. This attracted mainstream attention as he made appearances on the Today Show, Hot 97, 106 & Park and many other essential Hip Hop stops. Fronting his own label “Reach” Records, the 116 crew has sold out countless stadiums and is a force to be reckoned with. Lecrae is the go to man of faith in the music industry, and he is far from his peak.
Candace Cameron Bure
This Full House alum has not missed a beat (see what I did there?). She has danced her way into our hearts on Dancing with the Stars and avidly speaks about her faith whenever she is asked or gets the chance. Here she is talking about doing all things during Dancing with the Stars.
Reality TV sensations turned political consultants, the Dynasty family has tansended all expected barriers. Even the youngest Robertson has become a cultural icon herself, writing her own book and taking open stances on modesty in our generation and abstinence. Their Reign is far from over and reaches from fragrances to tshirts and political television, no one is stopping this God fearing family. Here is Phil talking about his faith.
Seattle Seahawks and Superbowl Quarterback Russell Wilson leaped into the spotlight not only for his incredible arm, but his great morale and substantial outlook on life. Recently he has made headlines again for choosing to remain abstinent while in a high profile relationship to artist and singer Ciara and following God together. Since, he has made key appearances in very strategic places such as hosting the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Sports Awards and given himself a reputable profile to go with his already set apart persona. Here is Russell discussing his faith.
With the newest Tyrese album “Black Rose” being #1 on the Billboard charts at the moment, it is hard to argue with the fact that Tyrese is hot right now. The purpose of his influence for the kingdom however, may seem blurry. Since God has made a way into Gibson’s heart in recent years Tyrese has not shy’d away from expressing his faith via all social platforms to the point of some calling his facebook a social-pulpit. Now, he has taken to race as a new endeavor, blurring the lines of the music industry and looking to create a diverse culture in the world of Pop. Themes of God’s grace and forgiveness line his songs, a man’s struggle with sin and overcoming yet falling short of Gods perfection are heavily present. All of these lyrics dance on the vocals of syncopated R&B perfection. Here he is speaking on The Breakfast Club about his newfound faith.
You may not recognize this face, but you may recognize the sneakers. This is the owner and designer of Fear of God LA clothing. He designed the famous trend who Kanye West popularized such as long tees with short sleeves, the return of the flannel, the long trench coats, the bomber jackets and much much more. I believe he even helped Yeezy with the Yeezy Ones, after all…Him, Ye, and a few other celebs are all buddies.
Let us Tebow. We all know about his on field faith and his need to praise God while playing football, but the truth is no one has been more blunt on the field than Tebow. Saying his relationship with God is literally like a marriage and he will shout out Jesus as many times as he can is no easy feat in the world of constant ridicule, but Tebow has transcended and is even up to play pro ball again. Here is Tebow on ESPN discussing his journey through football and having a plaque at University of Florida.
He has been crowned by Snoop himself as the new king of West Coast Hip Hop. But Lamar has risen to the heights of the industry while keeping an odd humility and spiritual awareness. Traces of the gospel are heard all throughout his music and although he is absolutely not a modest MC, his music conveys an honesty that is lacking in the kingdom. Lecrae has mentioned him as someone he cannot wait to work with and CCM trailblazer Andy Mineo has a lyric comparing himself to Lamar. Lecrae mentions conversations between the two rappers who have discussed their faith and the necessity to bring that side of energy to the industry. Here is an article written by Buzzfeed and a video where Lamar briefly describes his spirituality and reasons for incorporating it in his music.
Obviously this reformed bad-boy turned saint is still selling out arenas all over the world. However, not everyone wants to see him knock out Mayweather. Pacquiao has actually become an ultra succesfull recording artist on his home front of The Philippines. Pacquiao has a testimony unlike so many with former drug and alcohol abuse and now he stands with the likes of Tim Tebow discussing his faith as unashamed and blunt. It’s a new breed of Christian man, a warrior who will stand for his calling and not conform. Pacquiao is by far influencing people all over the world.
Thats right, he’s a belieber. Call me crazy but it’s true. Beiber was born in a Christian home and raised in church until superstardom brought him away from his roots. However, time after time the Beibs has made his attepts at restoring his relationship with the Lord and was never clearly able to. Recently, he has been seen with the likes of Pastor Carl Lentz, Rich Wilkerson Jr., Jerry Lorenzo and even attended the Hillsong Speak, We’re Listening Conference. Any true bleiber will tell you the Beibs is on a path to restore his recent recklessness and we can only pray this was brought on by the grace of God doing something in his heart. Imagine Justin Beiber as a full on believer? Yea, powerful ministry (even if you don’t like his stuff). Here he is talking about Jesus.
