The Influencers Guide To Failing Well
If there is one thing that separates strength and weakness, the lifestyle you’re living and the lifestyle you’re dreaming of, it’s failure. It stops dreams dead in their tracks. It changes mindsets, alters reality, even ruins relationships. Failing can completely shatter someones world. So what can you do when success in your future endeavors is far from attainable? When there is a stumbling block along the highway to living the good life? We do as Will Smith said once. We “Fail Forward.”
The first thing to understand is that
“Professional failure is not personal failure.”
Who you are as a person is not determined by what you do in your career, but what your creator has naturally made you to be. Your value however, is what we are striving to increase. Not knowing this is why so many people can get depressed when they fail. Or miss a huge opportunity. We feel so horrendously when we fail. We are reaching for value, we are reaching for greater purpose.
Why Do We Need Purpose?
Every single person on this planet understands the void which haunts our hearts and existence. If our Creator has given us a purpose then it is up to us to discover it. Adding value to whoever it is we’ve decided to influence. When we make a conscious decision to do so, we will notice a change in our priorities.
So how do we “Fail Forward?” What is the best way to fail well?
Failing Is Not A Knocked Over Hurdle
Too many times in creative fields, we see failing as a hurdle we’ve knocked over. There’s just another one on it’s way and we have to jump higher if we want to get to where we are going. I simply don’t believe this. I don’t think many successful people do. In many industries including business there are infinite ways to get the same solution. Like simply walking around the hurdle. Picking up the hurdle and placing it behind you, or even going underneath it.
If you’re following my analogy, what I’m saying is that failure to many, seems like a death sentence. Depression is not an option when we fail, because failure is not bad. “Now I’ll never be a CEO!” Well, why not just start your own company? I’ve wondered? A good way to simply walk around the hurdle. It is absolutely easier said then done, but lets talk about failure.
It’s Manly To Fail (Or Womanly)
All the instinctual emotions that come with failure are bad. Embarrassment, shame, guilt, fear if you lost someone else’s money. But to fail isn’t to lose. It’s how you handle it that makes you a loser or a winner. It’s the days after the loss that determine your character. Will you go to God and say what’s next, because I need to press on? Or will it deter your motivation? You see, even though failing seems like suffering, it can be a vital tool to build character. Don’t believe me?
…but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5
Analyze Where You Went Wrong
In the world of influence and social media, there are so many variable that could have gone wrong. You could have been targeting the wrong audience, maybe you weren’t paying Facebook enough to talk to your own audience (sorry, woosah), or simply not enough follow through with your readership. Walking through your every step is vital to your future. Take it one step at a time and find the broken link. When you find it, fix it and try it again.
Be Proud Of Your Failure
This is the most important. Your failure means that you did something. You tried, you developed an idea, you put it out there, and it didn’t work. We’ve all heard about the famous failures, seen the memes (Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, now Steph Curry, etc) but this is my point. Without it, there is no appreciation for success. Without it there is no chance for success.
Learn to take joy in your process and pick yourself up again, the creative process doesn’t only apply to the standard artist. If you are a business person, you are an artist of finances or companies (funny I know, but you’re better than me with that stuff). Take joy in discovering new flaws in your methods. Risk is what makes reward unique to the risk taker. So be that risk taker, and risk failure for the chance of success. Now the only thing you have to do is…define success.
