Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?
When pandemonium strikes or a loved one gets hurt, there is a natural inclination for those of us who may not see God as good or just. To blame him for something he is not responsible for. This world sees injustices all the time and living in the midst of so many of them it becomes easy to throw the blame onto a deity who “cannot defend himself”.
Firstly it’s important to understand the question being asked. If you are willing to ask why bad things are happening, you must have a set requirement for bad and good. Meaning that you have an opinion of what is absolutely bad/evil/wrong, and what is good/right. This can only work if you leave God room to be real.
Furthermore, you must specify who is an inherently good person and who is an inherently bad person. Who gets the deciding factor in this decision and why? Some might argue a person is good in relation to others. For example, I’m a good person because I’ve never killed anyone, or never gotten in a fight on the street. The problem here is that when that logic is taken into a societal extreme, you can say well “That terrorist isn’t that bad a person, he’s really a good person because he was no Hitler.” and “Hitler wasn’t that bad because he was no Stalin.” and so on. It is a dark slippery slope of self-justifying rhetoric.
If God is not real to you, then there is no absolute truth of good and bad. And as harsh as it may seem, the most cruel of acts have no moral compass or significance. They can’t be held accountable to anything accept a subjective scale of one persons idea of what it means to be good or bad. For example, if someone commits a murder, who is to say that it is wrong, if in the mind of the criminal it is justified? Our legal system works on a moral compass which at it’s core holds biblical principals. I am not saying we are a Christian run government however, the ideas and morals which are enforced have been established by a Judeo-Christian worldview and a biblical perspective. At least they were about a decade ago.
God Defends Himself
If you happen to think that God cannot defend himself when bad things happen to good people, he does so every time. His word, or scripture says clearly that he will not be mocked. He also clarifies who is clearly at fault when bad things happen.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” -John 10:10
God clearly is a giver of life while the enemy or the devils purpose is always to steal, to kill and to destroy. So if anything is ever stolen in your life, if anything or any one has ever been killed in your life, any situation has been killed in your life, or any purpose or thing has been destroyed in your life it wasn’t God but it was the enemy looking to attack you.
Sure it may sound spooky, or superstitious but it is not. It is in the scriptures and it is the clear divide of good and evil. We tend to shift the blame on God when he is telling us who is really at fault here. But He tells us what He is responsible for as well.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”-James 1:17
So if theres anything or anyone in your life who is a blessing to you or is good to you, if theres something perfect in your life that you’re grateful for…Yep, thank your Father God for that. Because He gave that to you.
It’s all about learning where the line is, what the difference is between good and evil. Some things may feel good, but they aren’t good FOR us, and in turn end up destroying us completely. Those things are not from God. The sooner we understand all of these things the sooner we can wake up with gratitude.
The goal is not to make people feel as if everything is their fault, rather to stop and realize that true evil exists. Sometimes it manifests in people but none of us are perfect. The goal rather is to know that we have a perfect God who will fix our hearts and steer us into a direction of inner-peace and peace towards each other. But only if we allow Him to.
What do you think? Is there true evil in the world? Are some people evil and some people not? Comment and let me know.
